NYC Schools ban ChatGPT

(Source)

So yesterday school officials in New York City blocked the chatbot ChatGPT. According to abc news the chatbot will spit out a paper on the American Civil War in just a few seconds, with links and sources all tidly added.

It's believed that now when the largest US school district has pushed the button, others will follow. It's worth mentioning however that the ban/restriction is only applied on the school's network and devices.

OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT says that they are trying to figure out ways to detect potential misuse and prevent it from their end as well. But it is probably difficult

(read impossible).

I think a better approach would be to try and utilize these kind of tools in education, instead of straight out banning them.

Or we can go full 180 and make students not utilize computers, cellphones or the internet when at school. What a time to be alive!

What happens when you get home then, on your own, free to roam network? Will this mean the end for some traditional home work? (We can only hope!)

AI Still going strong despite tech downturn

Investments in the AI space has not slowed down in the recent months downturn of tech companies. Instead it has been going strong. Just a few days ago OpenAI (the founder of chatbot ChatGPT) was evaluated at almost $30 billion.

During 2022, more than $1.37 billion was invested into generative A.I companies. This is almost as much as the previous five years together.

Tools like DALL-E and ChatGPT has made the AI-visions for entrepreneurs higher than ever. We are seeing some sort of paradigm shift that has been hyped up a lot during the last years.

But is this all good?

There are companies that ride the AI-wave, claiming to do amazing and new things in the AI-space, but without any real or concrete ideas. Or companies that try to apply AI and machine learning (ML) to things that simply doesn't need them.

"everyone got excited about A.I [...] People need something to tell their investors or themselves, honestly that there is a next thing to be excited about."

Michael Dempsey, investor at venture firm Compound

Are we seeing a bubble in A.I as we had in crypto?

With the situation in Europe, higher energy prices and interests, is the era of "non profitable" tech companies finally reaching an end? Maybe it's good that the market is cooling down a bit.

Today's Quote

AI is actually becoming boring, and despite what we might all think about that word, this is a positive development for businesses.

The technology is maturing and, most critically, more mainstream companies across a wider range of sectors are adopting AI solutions.
