Here we go, the first post!

Hey,

Well here we are, after quite some time of tinkering around I'm finally taking the step to do this newsletter. I am one of these people that procrastinates waaay too much. I hope this will kick myself going a bit.

There are lots of excuses to start anything, a business or just working out, and as a pro-crastinator i know things won't get done unless you get to action. πŸͺœ

As they say, JUST DO IT!

So who am I and why even subscribe to a random newsletter in the deep interwebs. My name is Mattis and I've been working in Big Data/Analytics for more than half a decade. I've been working in various areas, everything from building platforms to machine learning/AI development.

I'm very interested in Big Data, AI and machine learning and I read about it a lot. I do very much believe that it will change many industries in the coming decades, not just IT/Tech.

Just as electricity transformed almost everything 100 years ago, today I actually have a hard time thinking of an industry that I don’t think AI will transform in the next several years.

NVIDIA

Last year NVIDIA revealed their Omniverse, basically a metaverse for all. How great, we reeallyy need more of those..

No but in all seriousness, they are actually solving one problem here. Companies like Mercedes-Benz are utilizing the Omniverse to connect their own digitalized production plants. The aim here is that they are able to model, test and eventually create better and more efficient plants in the real world. That's nice!

They are doing this by using USD. πŸ’Έ

No, not those sweet greenies but rather "Universal Scene Description". The USD is an open ecosystem that aids in composing, simulating and collaborating within the metaverses. Maybe soon I can bring my too expensive CS:GO skins into Minecraft and be cool in there too. πŸ˜Ž

It also seems that metaverses could be a booster in the development of autonomous vehicles and enhancing the customer experience by allowing customers to "try out" their car before even heading to the dealer. Gimmick?

Do you think there is a place for metaverses or do they simply not exist?

Anyone seen this AI Chatbo..

YES!!

So OpenAI opened up their ChatBot ("ChatGPT") just before christmas and it's already famous, who would have known! (After Dall-E 2, their AI image generator. This couldn't really be  a surprise)

The chatbot is based on GPT-3 (Generative Pretrained Transformer 3), which is a language processing AI model developed by OpenAI.

So how good is it? Well, it's so good that it writes better reports than high-school students, in almost perfect grammar. As all teenagers that are inclined for more fun things, it make a perfect helping (read cheating) tool. Guess how to spot a student using it? The report is simply too good. πŸ€“

Oh and also, it's almost impossible to prove that our dear robot friend wrote it, as all reports are unique. (read more here)

Try it out for yourself and let us know what you think. Can you fool it? You can access it here: chat.openai.com/chat

Is this just the beginning, are we all losing our jobs or will it take a few more years? πŸ‘€

Oracle Cloud going strong πŸ“ˆ

This was actually news for me but Oracle is ending on-prem support by 2033?!

I mean it's most likely waaay cheaper for Oracle to provide their databases as a SaaS but as someone who has worked with sensitive data (in Europe), this isn't very good. WE NEED ON-PREM STUFF

According to isg-one.com, Oracle's cloud ecosystem is growing double digits as companies has shifted their focus to a more "modern" service based IT that "optimizes customer and employee experience".

Do you think that this move by Oracle is correct? Will they be able to take market over AWS for example? Will this really be cheaper for end users/consumers? πŸ€”

So, finally we are here. The first post. I have to be honest, this took way longer than I expected. Not sure if it's just me being slow or it will take this long every day (that's right, now we're daily baby!)

But anyways, I really want to thank you for reading this far.

If you have any suggestions, feedback (good or bad) please reach out to me by replying to this email or via Twitter (@slua_st). I know that the design of the whole thing is a bit all over the place right now, but I hope to sort it out this weekend.

If you have topics you would like to be brought up, don't hesitate to reach out!

Yours,

Mattis
